Stress and insomnia

With over 33 percent of the population suffering from poor sleep at some point in their lives, it is no surprise that for some it becomes a problem that affects their daily lives. Insomnia in most cases is short-term and can be brought on by many external factors, once these factors are dealt with the insomnia subsides. It is common to experience stress related sleeplessness, where you find yourself unable to sleep. It seems your brain is constantly battling with the stress of the day or replaying problems over and over. The frustration of knowing that not only can’t you sleep, but that the night is slipping away and all too soon you will have to get up just compounds the problem. When eventually you do drift off into an exhausted sleep it won’t leave you feeling refreshed in the morning, in fact it is more likely than not to leave you feeling grumpy, groggy and totally unprepared for the day ahead, which in turn can lead to another bad nights sleep.

Most people turn to over-the-counter insomnia cures to get them through periods like this. Normally this pattern is only short-lived, with most people finding that sleep returns to normal once the period of stress is over. However, for some this is not so. With real insomnia, the constant cycle of not sleeping and feeling unrejuvinated in the mornings just becomes a fact of life. Cases like these often lead to social interaction suffering, along with family life. Many people are quick to call insomniacs ill-tempered or party poopers, and while this may be the case this isn’t through choice. Without the right type and amount of sleep any human being will start to become less functional and sociable. Thought processes are muddled and decisions seem a hundred times harder to make. Insomnia, whether temporary or more long-term can have an effect on physical appearance too, with sufferers seeming lifeless, with dull skin and lank hair.

Along with stress, factors such as sleeping environment contribute a major part to insomnia. Interrupted sleep can be caused by beds that aren’t comfortable, curtains that don’t shut out enough light, or a room that is situated in a noisy area. Some over-the-counter medicines can cause temporary insomnia. Your sleeping environment plays a big part in a good nights sleep, so if you are feeling unrested in the mornings, asses where you are sleeping.  If adjusting your sleeping environment doesn’t seem to help, it may be a physiological problem that is interrupting your sleep, such as sleep apnea.
