Why can’t I sleep? The answer to that depends whether it is a rare occasion or it happens every night. If not being able to sleep is not a daily occurrence, then what you did on that particular night before going to bed may be cause of not getting sleep. On the other hand if it is a nighly occurrence, then you have insomnia.
Insomnia is the body’s way of saying that something isn’t right.
Insomnia can be caused by a lot of things. Current medical problems and its pain and discomfort, change in working times such as night shifts, stress, anxiety, depression, too much of coffee. Many people have insomnia. People who have insomnia may not be able to fall asleep. They may wake up during the night and not be able to fall back asleep, or they may wake up too early in the morning.
It’s not really a serious problem for your health, but it can make you feel tired, depressed and irritable. It can also make it hard to concentrate during the day.
Adults need to sleep for 7 to 8 hours every night. If you do not feel sleepy during the day, then you know that you have had enough sleep at night.
Throughout your adult life the amount of sleep you require remains constant. Having said that, remember that sleep habits are likely to change as you age. Older people are know to take naps during the day, and sleep less at nights.
If the cause of your insomnia is not clear, your doctor may suggest that you fill out a sleep diary. The diary will help you keep track of when you go to bed, how long you lie in bed before falling asleep, how often you wake during the night, when you get up in the morning and how well you sleep.
Try out these things, they will help you get better sleep
Try and go to bed every night at exactly the same time, even on the weekends, and even though you have had not slept well at all the previous night. This will help train your body to sleep at night.
Create an habit out of going to bed, make it a routine, a ritual. Do the same thing every night before going to sleep. For example, take a warm bath and then read for 10 minutes every night before going to bed. After some time these activities get connected with the act of sleeping, and you will feel sleepy when you do them.
Use the bedroom only for sleeping or having sex. When you are in bed, do nothing else, but trying to sleep. Do not eat, drink, talk on the phone, or watch TV.
Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. If noise is a problem, use a fan to mask the noise or use earplugs. If you must sleep during the day, hang dark blinds over the windows or wear an eye mask.
Get up and go to another room if you are still awake after 30 minutes of trying to go sleep. Sit quietly for about 20 minutes before going back to bed. Do this as many times as you need to until you can fall asleep.
